Warriors Slips Past Volleyball In Conference Opener

ECSU takes down Beacons in rematch of 2021 LEC title game



BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Anna Barry and Bella Johnson the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University handed volleyball a tough 3-0 Little East Conference loss Friday evening at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

All three sets were back-and-forth affairs, with the Warriors earning the slim advantage to take their first conference win of 2022. In set one, ECSU maintained their slim lead, and picked-up a 25-22 decision. The second set could have gone either way, with the two rivals exchanging control of the scoreboard. In the end it was the Warriors who collected their second straight set victory with a 26-24 win. The final frame, was a comeback win for the Warriors, with UMass Boston holding a sizeable lead through the midway point of the set. ECSU made a huge offensive push down the stretch and took the 25-21 decision.

Barry and Johnson combined for 11 kills respectively, with Johnson leading all players with a .500 hitting percentage. Barry was just as impressive as she finished the match with a .444 clip.

Livia Trindade led the Beacons offense with eight kills, while freshman Alyssa Tonnu had her best to-date scoring seven kills with a respectable .263 hitting percentage.

Melina Sullivan and Amelia Devlin combined for 30 assists respectively. Taryn Broughal, who had six kills on the night led the Beacons with three aces, alongside Lauren Westlund. Defensively, Ally Dean put-up 24 digs, while four different Beacons recorded one block assist.

  • Friday's match was a rematch of the 2021 Little East Conference Championship, which UMass Boston won in dramatic fashion as they rallied to win a 3-2 victory in Clark Gymnasium
  • All-time the Beacons are now 12-17 against the Warriors
  • Combined the score was tied a total of 16 times in the first set, 21 on the night
  • There was also eight lead changes throughout the opening set

The Beacons will travel to Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
