Melchionda No-Hits WestConn To Lead Softball To Conference Sweep

Sophomore records fourth no-hitter in program history in game two & drives in game-winning runs in game one

BOSTON, Mass. – Brianna Melchionda continued her dominance in the circle and with the bat as she led softball to their second-ever sweep over WestConn following 2-0, 4-0 wins Tuesday afternoon at UMB Softball Field.

UMass Boston (12-6, 2-2 Little East Conference)
WestConn (10-8, 0-2 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After driving in the game-winning runs in the sixth inning in game one on a double to left field, Melchionda stepped into the circle to record another major career milestone.

In the nightcap, Melchionda finished two batters more than the minimum, but did post 13 strikeouts, one off her career best mark.

The sophomore is now just one of four pitchers in program history to ever record a no-hitter, the first since Jess Greenspan in 2017.

The Beacons offense gave Melchionda all the insurance runs she needed in the second inning when they plated three-runs. Sarah Harlinski drove in UMB's first run on a fielder's choice. Haley Tilberry then made it a 2-0 game on an RBI single up the middle. The Beacons final run came on a bases loaded wild pitch, which plated Caley Ruggiero. The then tacked on the fourth run in the bottom of the fifth on a Sydney Sanden RBI single.

UMass Boston posted a combined six hits in the game two victory, after finishing with just one hit in the opener.
