CASTLETON, Vt.—UMass Boston men's basketball used a huge second half and a record-setting night from
Malik Lorquet (Sharon, Mass.), to defeat host Castleton University 71-51 on Wednesday night at Glenbrook Gymnasium.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a sluggish first half, UMass Boston blitzed the hosts to start the second and outscored Castleton 45-22 to run away with the conference victory.Â

Lorquet was dominant in the win. The junior tied the program record with seven blocked shots and added 14 points and 16 rebounds. He also set the program record for blocks in a single-season with 65.Â

Senior
Charles Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) continued to terrorize the Spartans with a game-high 25 points. The Beacons leading scorer finished 9-18 from the field and 6-12 from distance.Â

Sophomore
Michael Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) reached double-figures for the second time in his career. The Beacons guard chipped in 15 points on 5-8 shooting from distance.

Senior
Charlie Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) facilitated the offense with a career-best nine assists. Charlie tacked on four points and six rebounds.

Johnny Torrence paced the Spartans with 12 points in 23 minutes. Oluwadare Sowunmi added 11 points and four rebounds for the hosts, who dropped their 14
th-straight contest.Â

Bobby Joy (Harwich, Mass.) opened the game with a 3-pointer, but that lead would last just over a minute and be the last time UMass Boston would lead in the first half. Castleton responded with a 9-0 run and led by as many as nine points in the half. UMass Boston began chipping into the deficit late and went into the break down 29-26 after a late Spartans layup.Â

UMass Boston came out of the break red hot and used an 11-2 spurt in the opening 3:31 to take the lead for good.

The game would stay close for the next two minutes, before UMass Boston used a 14-1 flurry to put the game away for good (54-38).
Charles Mitchell (10 points) and Lorquet (four points) combined for all 14 points and the Beacons defense forced two turnovers and four missed shots.Â
Charles Mitchell (22 points) and Walsh (nine points) combined for 31 points in the second half and nine of the Beacons 10 made 3-pointers.Â

BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston shot 55.2 percent (16-29) from the field in the second half and hit 10 of their 17 3-point attempts (58.8 percent). On the flip side, the Beacons held Castleton to a 5-22 (22.7 percent) showing and just two 3-pointers (2-11).Â
- Lorquet's seven blocks put him into a six-way tie for first-place in program history for blocks in a game. He also broke Daniel Doherty's ('85) record for blocks in a single-season. Doherty posted 62 blocks in the 1984-85 season.Â
- Mitchell has recorded 105 points in six career games against Castleton (17.5 points per game). With his 25 points on Thursday, he is just 25 points away (1,475) from becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 1,500 career points.Â
- With the win, UMass Boston improved to 6-0 all-time against the Spartans.Â
- Lorquet is now just four blocks away from tying Terry Kennedy's ('91) record for the most blocks in program history (159). Â
