I Can't Believe It's Not Krivtsov! Men's Ice Hockey Snaps Losing Streak In Overtime Thriller

BOSTON, Mass. – UMass Boston Men's Ice Hockey snapped a three-game scoreless streak and stretch of 10 consecutive periods without a goal at home on Friday night, finishing out their schedule before the winter break with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Anna Maria College in overtime.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 3, Anna Maria College 2 (OT)

UMass Boston (3-8-0)

Anna Maria College (4-6-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Less than three minutes into the contest, the Beacons got on the board with their first goal of the evening as junior forward Gino Carabelli set up junior defender Blake Colman at the top right side of the blue line. Colman fired on freshman goalie Cole Johnston and his shot was deflected in front by junior forward Jacob Banks into the back of the net to give UMass Boston an early 1-0 edge.

Just under 12 minutes into the first, Carabelli would get his second goal of the season as Bank and sophomore forward Kolye Bankauskas teamed up to find the junior on the wide-open right side of the goal mouth to bury the second goal of the period for the Beacons. After just one period, the Beacons held a 2-0 lead and a 15-11 advantage in shots on goal.

An aggressive offensive attack from both teams in the second period would result in 19 shots on goal for UMass Boston and six shots on net for Anna Maria. But Beacons senior goalie Sam Best and Cole Johnston for the AmCats would stand tall in net as neither team would be able to score. UMass Boston would have two power play chances while Anna Maria had one opportunity with a man up.

Still leading by two with 8:40 remaining in regulation, a five-minute penalty issued to Carabelli would send the AmCats on an extended power play which resulted in a goal from sophomore defender Derek Raposo on the slapshot from the left side of the ice with just over six minutes left in regulation. With the power play still in effect, senior defender Cam Tobey scored the game-tying goal as he streaked up the center of the ice and fired a wrist shot by Best, forcing the game to a three-on-three sudden death overtime affair.

After Best made a breakaway save against the AmCats early in the extra period, the game seemed headed to a tie despite the Beacons having a 4-on-3 power play for the final two minutes. But with under 10 seconds remaining in the game, freshman forward Grady Friedman fired a shot that was blocked and eventually found the stick of freshman forward Jazz Krivtsov on a pass from Banks. With time running out, Krivtsov laced the puck by Johnston as the Beacons snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 overtime thriller at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.
