HOW IT HAPPENED
After Clark began the game on an 8-2 run, the UMass Boston offense came to life as graduate forward Meg Dixon scored 10 of the next 17 Beacon points in the first quarter while sophomore forward Sunny Green hit a three, senior forward
Keriann Farina recorded a pair of free throws, and freshman guard Beeban Jikiemi-Pearson recorded a layup with four seconds left to give the Beacons a 19-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Never giving up control of the game, Dixon gave the Beacons their first double-digit lead of the game, 22-12, with 7:53 remaining in the second when she hit her second of three first half threes. UMass Boston would lead by as many as 15 points in the frame when junior transfer forward Alexah Potter hit a layup with 4:01 remaining, before the Cougars pushed back with a 7-2 run to end the half and pull within nine, 34-25.
The third quarter would be a back-and-forth affair once Clark University pulled within eight points, 38-30. UMass Boston would continue to respond at every Cougar advance, never allowing them to pull within more than 10 points in the third frame. The Beacons would go on a 6-0 run to regain the double-digit lead after a balanced offensive attack and lead by 12 points, 52-40, heading into the fourth quarter.
Trailing by 14 points with 7:29 left in the fourth quarter, 57-43, Clark would deploy a press break against the Beacons, leading to an 8-0 run for the Cougars after three turnovers by UMass Boston resulted in seven of those eight points to pull within six, 57-51. But the Beacon offense would respond once again and the defense would clamp down, forcing two Clark turnovers while going on a 6-0 run to go back in control for the 63-51 home victory.
