Leonard's First Collegiate Goal Gives Women's Ice Hockey Overtime Win Versus William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – Freshman forward Sydney Leonard scored her first collegiate goal in overtime against William Smith College on Saturday afternoon as UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey snapped a two-game scoreless and losing streak to defeat the Herons, 2-1, on the road.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 2, William Smith College 1

UMass Boston (4-3-0, 3-3-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore forward Allie Reifler got the Beacons on the scoreboard first near the end of the first period as freshman forwards Kristen Briggs and Isabella Henningsson-Brown teamed up to find Reifler for the opportunity which put UMass Boston ahead 1-0.

Senior forward Mia LaPlante would knot the game up at one all near the end of the second period as senior defender Lauren Jackson and sophomore forward Kayla Ketchabaw assisted LaPlante on her third goal of the season.

Standing strong in net for the Beacons was freshman goalie Leah Bosch who made 29 saves in regulation against the Herons to help force overtime. In the three-on-three battle for five minutes each team would have their fair share of opportunities to come away victorious before freshman forward Emily Hansen and freshman defender Mia Boyd hit Leonard on the breakaway to give UMass Boston their third conference victory of the season and move back to an over .500 record.
