Women's Ice Hockey Blanked by Colby College in 15th Annual Codfish Bowl Opener

BOSTON, Mass.  – Freshman forward Beth Sinson collected a rebounded puck in the offensive zone for Colby College in the opening frame, netting the first of three goals for the Mules as UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey fell in the first round of the 15th Annual Codfish Bowl, 3-0, at home on Saturday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 0, Colby College 3

UMass Boston (4-4-0)

Colby College (2-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Colby College jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first period after an initial shot by senior forward Stephanie Lane was kicked out of the crease by starting junior goalie Victoria Kennedy for UMass Boston. The loose puck was controlled by Sinson who fired another shot on Kennedy that bounced over her head and into the back of the net with just under 16 minutes left.

The Mules would threaten to extend their lead to two on a breakaway by senior forward Jillian Mazzocca, but a sprawling Kennedy would force Mazzocca wide, and her shot would ricochet off the post and out of harms way. Despite having a power play during the opening frame and a turnover deep in the offensive zone, UMass Boston would be unable to score on sophomore goalie Paige Bolyard through the opening 20 minutes and trail 1-0.

Despite three power plays, including a five-minute major, Colby would be unable to breakthrough against Victoria Kennedy in the second period who stood tall in net against the 20 shots she faced from the Mule offensive attack. Through the middle 20 minutes of play, UMass Boston would only register four shots against Bolyard. In the final two minutes of the second, a couple of shots from senior forward Hannah McDougall and freshman defender Claire Giuliano were nearly cleaned up from by the Colby College defense after freshman forward Sydney Leonard nearly placed them in the back of the net as the Beacons trailed by one entering the final period of play.

Freshman defender Jo Tattersall and senior forward McKinely Karpa added goals for the Mules late in the third period to give Colby College a commanding 3-0 lead and down the Beacons in the Codfish Bowl opener on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship game on Sunday afternoon against Bowdoin College at 3:00 PM.
