A Season's Best Performance Leads Men's Ice Hockey to Shutout Win Over Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Senior goalie Sam Best recorded his first shutout of the 2022-23 season, stopping all 32 shots fired at him by the University of Southern Maine, as the Beacons defeated the Huskies on the road, 3-0, at USM Ice Arena on Saturday night to even up their conference record at 2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A scoreless first period would result in 13 saves for Best on the Beacon side while sophomore goalie Kyle Penton stopped 11 shots for Southern Maine in his first of three consecutive period making 10-plus saves.

Just over five and a half minutes into the second period, freshman forward Jazz Krivtsov broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season after sophomore forward Ty Mathews and freshman forward Mike Manzo found the Santa Clarita, California native for the first score of the contest. The assist for Manzo extended his point streak to four straight games.

11 minutes later, sophomore forward Kolye Bankauskas netted his first goal of the season as freshman forward Grady Friedman, who has now recorded a point in five of his first six games in a Beacon uniform, assisted on the Bankauskas goal that helped give the Beacons a 2-0 edge late in the second period.

Senior forward Andy Walker registered his first goal of the season and the first power play goal of the year for UMass Boston in the third period as it was Manzo again with the assist that led to the third and final goal of the Beacon afternoon as they left USM Ice Arena with a 3-0 victory over Southern Maine on Saturday.

  • Mike Manzo's point streak was extended to four consecutive games with his assist on the first Beacon goal, he has now recorded an assist in four of six games played
  • Despite having his three-game goal streak snapped, Grady Friedman's point streak was extended to four consecutive games with his assist on the second Beacon goal
  • The Beacons have now won eight of their last nine games against Southern Maine
WHO'S NEXT
UMass Boston returns home next Friday to take on Elmira College inside Edward T. Barry Ice Rink with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM. The two teams split their home-and-home matchup last year with each team winning at home. The Soaring Eagles are currently ranked 13th in the DCU/USCHO Division III Men's Poll for the week of November 7th.
