Volleyball Splits Home Tri-Match

Beacons earn a 3-2 win over Roger Williams, before falling to Springfield, 3-0


BOSTON, Mass. – In their final home tri-match of the season, volleyball earned a hard fought 3-2 win over Roger Williams University, before falling to regionally-ranked Springfield College, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In their win against the Hawks, saw their 2-0 lead disappear as Roger Williams grabbed a 25-21 win the third and a 26-24 in the fourth. The Beacons dominated the opening frame with a convincing 25-17 decision. They then escaped a late rally by RWU in the second as they earned a 26-24 decision. The Beacons controlled the lead for the majority of the fifth set as they claimed a tight 15-13 victory to take the match.

A trio of Beacons finished in double-figures in kills for the first time this season. Alyssa Tonnu led UMB with 14 kills, and a .286 hitting percentage. Mikayla Cleary was consistent through all five-frames as she posted a .417 hitting percentage. Lauren Westlund and McKayla Geraghty combined for 23 kills respectively on 76 attempts.

Amelia Devlin tallied a career-high 38 assists on 124 attempts. Ally Dean finished with a team-best eight digs, while Geraghty posted a double-double with 14 digs. Toni Guerra finished with 16 put-ups and had two of the team's 13 aces. Taryn Broughal led the Beacons at the service line with three aces, and was just as impressive at the net scoring three block solos.

In the nightcap, the Beacons had a pair of close sets with the Pride, as they fell 25-17 in both stanzas. The third and final frame was all Springfield from the opening serve, as the Pride completed their sweep of the day with a 25-10 win in the third. In the second match, the Pride made quick work of Roger Williams, as they earned a 3-0 win that match as well.

Westlund led the Beacons with kills, while Devlin notched 14 assists. Brianna Henderson and Devlin each tallied eight digs to lead UMB's defensive effort.
