Women's Hockey Rallies Past Castleton

Katie Wilbert recorded the game-winner in the final six minutes of regulation

RUTLAND, Vt. – A pair of third period goals by Katie Wilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa.) lifted women's hockey to a 3-2 come-from-behind New England Hockey Conference win over Castleton University Saturday afternoon at Spartans Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Wilbert tied the score at 2-2 at the 11:47 mark of the third period, before scoring the game-winner with just over five to play in regulation to secure the Beacons first conference win of 2022.

Following the crucial goal, the Beacons defense had to step-up and had to kill off a pair of penalties to secure the victory.

Also having a big game for UMB was Gabby Shontz (Reading, Vt.) who had the first goal of the afternoon, and also assisted on the tying goal.

Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.) registered 14 saves to earn her fifth win of the year. Her busiest period was the first, when she made seven stops.

Castleton tied the game 33 seconds after the Beacons goal in the opening period, with Nancy Benedict finding the back of the net. Darby Palisi gave the Spartans their first and only lead of the day at the midway point of the second on an unassisted power-play goal.

Senior center Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) led the Beacons with 10 face-off wins, while Rachael Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) finished second with eight victories.
