HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
The Beacons scored at least two goals in every period and Best made 24 saves to earn the weekend conference sweep.Â
Â
With his 24 saves, Best became the first goalie in program history to post three-consecutive shutouts. He broke a tie with Kevin Bendel ('12) and Billy Faust ('16) for the most-consecutive shutouts and moved into second-place for the longest scoreless streak in program history (179:27).Â
Â
Freshman
Kolye Bankauskas (Coventry, R.I.) returned to the lineup and scored a team-best two goals in the win. Bankauskas added an assist and went 10-14 on face-offs.Â
Â
Fellow freshman
Alex Duncan (Andover, Mass.) led the team with three assists and four total points.
Jacob Banks (Westminster, Mass.) and
Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) each added a goal and two assists, while
Ty Mathews (Auburn, Mass.),
Corey Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) and
Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas) chipped in a goal and an assist apiece.Â
Â
Ryan Bogan (Brick, N.J.),
Nick Daluisio (Aston, Pa.) and
Pat Keegan (Maynard, Mass.) also scored for the Beacons.Â
Â
Skidmore used three different goalies in the contest. Dominic Rodrigue got the start and allowed four goals on 11 shots in the first period. Brandon Collett made 20 saves on 25 shots over 28:55, before Simon Brenter made his collegiate debut and stopped nine of 11 shots in 11:05 of action.Â
Â
UMass Boston put the game out of reach in the first period.Â
Â
The Beacons third line of Banks, Duncan and Bankauskas all scored in a 8:45 span of the first period to make it 3-0 and Skinner tacked on a late goal on a 3-on-1 rush to make it 4-0 after one.Â
Â
UMass Boston extended the advantage to 6-0 after two, when Mathews and Nitkin (power-play) scored in the second stanza.Â
Â
The Beacons added five more goals in the final period. Bogan, Bankauskas, Clifton, Keegan (power-play) and Daluisio all scored in the first 13:07 of the period to give the Beacons their first double-digit goal game of the season.Â
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston outshot the Spartans 47-24 and earned a 37-20 edge in face-offs.Â
- Best's scoreless streak of 179:27 is the second-longest scoreless streak in program history behind only Faust's run in 2016. The former Beacons goaltender did not allow a goal across parts of four games for a streak of 182:16.Â
- Banks recorded his first collegiate goal and assist in his second career game. Keegan also scored his first collegiate goal in the victory.Â
- With the win, UMass Boston has now won 14-straight games over the Spartans and leads the all-time series 18-7-2.Â
- Best is now third in program history for shutouts in a single-season (three) and tied for third in career shutouts (three). He needs one more shutout to tie Faust and Bailey MacBurnie ('20) for the program record for shutouts in a single-season (four).Â
- The Beacons 11-goal outburst was their most goals scored in a single-game since the 2015 ECAC East Quarterfinals, when they defeated Skidmore College 11-1.Â
- Freshman defenseman Michael Krupinski (Dallas, Texas) posted a career-high two assists and two points in the win.Â
- The Beacons improved to 5-1 on their eight-game homestand and are now 6-1 at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink this season.Â
