Men's Hockey Earns Season-Sweep Of Rival #5 Babson

Senior Chris Peters scored the game-winning goal with 47.9 seconds left in regulation

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.) broke a 4-4 tie with 47.9 seconds left in regulation, to help UMass Boston men's hockey secure their first-ever, season-sweep over rival #5 Babson College on Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 5, #5 Babson College 4
(UMass Boston 10-6-1, New England Hockey Conference 6-3-1)
(#5 Babson College 9-4-2, New England Hockey Conference 5-4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Peters capped off a three-point night with a snipe from the right circle that went over Babson goalie Nolan Hildebrand's shoulder and into the top right-corner. The conference's leading scorer scored a team-high two goals and added an assist in the victory.

The goal capped off a wild game that saw the Beacons come back from an early 1-0 deficit, take a 4-2 lead midway through the second, only to see Babson tie the game with two goals in the final 1:34 of the second.

Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas), Devin Moran (Leominster, Mass.) and Corey Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) also scored for the Beacons in the victory.

Senior Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) and freshman Nolan Barrett (Wayne, N.J.) each added two assists in the victory.

In net, junior Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) earned the victory after making 19 saves on 23 shots. Best stopped all four shots he faced in the third period to improve to 9-3-1.

Ryan Black led the Beavers with two goals, while Cole Sanderson and Chris Rooney added a goal apiece.

Babson All-American goalie Brad Arvanitis was pulled after 32:19. The graduate student allowed four goals on 23 shots, before being replaced by Hildebrand. The junior goalie was the tough-luck loser, after making 14 saves on 15 shots in the final 27:04.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after earning a slight 9-8 edge in shots. Sanderson broke the scoreless tie at 18:40 of the period, off assists from Ryan Campbell and Mike Egan.

UMass Boston turned the game on it's head to begin the second period. The Beacons scored three goals in the first 10:28, four in the first 12:19 and outshot the hosts 20-6 for the period.

Clifton tied the game at 3:50 off of passes from Ty Mathews (Auburn, Mass.) and Peters.
Peters gave the Beacons their first lead of the game at 7:04, when he scored a power-play goal.

Skinner pushed UMass Boston's advantage to 3-1 just past the midway point of the period, when he scored an unassisted goal, at 10:28.

Babson briefly stemmed the tide when Black scored a power-play goal at 11:10.

UMass Boston answered right back, as Moran scored at 12:19 off passes from Nitkin and Andy Walker (Detroit, Mich.).

Babson roared back into the game late in the second. Black cut the deficit to 4-3 at 18:26 and the hosts tied the game at 19:36 on Rooney's goal.

The third period was much more even, with the Beacons holding a slim 10-8 advantage and neither side able to take the lead until Peters' goal.

On the breakout, Barrett and Ryan Bogan (Brick, N.J.) combined to find Peters who skated into the zone and then unleashed his shot to send the Beacons' bench and supporters into a frenzy.
