Volleyball Downs Bates In Home Tri-Match Split

Beacons defeat the Bobcats 3-0 in the final match of the day








BOSTON, Mass. – After suffering a 3-0 loss to Salve Regina University to begin the day, volleyball bounced back with one of their best performances of the young season as they powered past Bates College with a 3-0 victory to close out their home tri-match Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first match of the day, UMB nearly jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but were defeated 25-23 and 31-29 by the Seahawks. Salve Regina secured the 3-0 victory with a 25-18 win the third frame. In just the second set the score was tied 16 times, and there were nine lead changes.

Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) was tied for the match-high with 13 kills, alongside Salve's Nicole Karabaich and Madison Lee. Carsen Komminsk (Worthington, Ohio) continued her climb in the all-time record books as she moved into third, following a 31 assist performance. The Ohio native also had two of the team's four aces. Alyssa Ruan (Quincy, Mass.) picked-up four aces and led the Beacons defense with 10 digs. Defensively Czapiewska registered 10 digs to earn her second double-double of the year, as well as posting three block solos and two block assists.

Middles Taryn Broughal (Branford, Conn.) and Marcelle Tiscareno (El Paso, Texas) combined for one block solo and six block assists respectively.  

In the nightcap, the Beacons jumped all over the Bobcats and never looked back. They set the tone early as they earned a hard fought 25-20 win. They then clawed their way back in the second set to claim a 26-24 victory. The third set was all UMB from the opening serve as they cruised to a 25-18 victory.

Czapiewska was once again the driving force behind UMB's offense with her 10 kills. Tiscareno was a close second with eight kills. The duo both hit over .400, with Tiscareno recording a match-best .467. Komminsk picked-up 26 more assists and six aces to cap-off a solid week for the setter.

Ruan notched eight digs to go along with 18 service receptions and two aces.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • All-time UMass Boston is now 2-2 against Bates College and 3-1 against Salve Regina University
  • Saturday's match-up marked the first between UMB and Bates since October 16, 2010, and was the first time that the two teams had faced each other in Clark Gym
  • With Saturday's performance, Komminsk is now sitting with 1,526 career assists with is third-most all-time behind Pepper Baker and Cassy Hanneman
  • She is just the third setter in program history to record 1,500 career assists
  • UMB hit .144 in the first match and .262 in the second
  • The Beacons combined for 25 aces in the split
