Senior back scores a pair of goals in the 2-1 win at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – Senior back turned forward Mary Jo Murphy netted a pair of goals including the game-winner in overtime to lift women's soccer to their first win since November 9, 2019 as they defeated RPI by the final of 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at East Campus Athletic Village.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston (1-0)
RPI (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

On the game-winner, Jackie Turner (Plymouth, Mass.) brought the field up the far side of the field.  She then crossed the ball into the box where she found Murphy crashing the net.  The Worcester native hit a perfectly placed one-timer to seal the Beacons victory.

Murphy's first goal, which tied it at 1-1 came in the 64th minute on an unassisted play. She rifled a shot in from outside the 18-yard box that beat the keeper just inside the far post.

The Beacons offense dominated Wednesday's contest as they outshot RPI a one-sided 24-11, 13-5 in shots on goal.  RPI did not record a shot in the overtime period.

Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) made just three saves to earn the victory.

RPI, netted the first goal of the contest in the 24th minute with Gwen Barnes beating Spylios to the far post after a defensive let down.
