#5 Elmira College Sneaks By Women's Hockey In OT

Sophomore goalie Victoria Kennedy made a career-high 42 saves in the contest

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's hockey played their most complete game of the season in a 1-0 overtime loss to #5 Elmira College on Saturday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

THE BASICS
#5 Elmira 1, UMass Boston 0
(UMass Boston 3-4, New England Hockey Conference 3-3)
(Elmira College 7-0, NEHC 6-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons executed the game-plan to perfection and sophomore goalie Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.) made a career-high 42 saves, to help the Beacons stay even with the fifth-ranked Eagles for 60+ minutes.

The overtime session saw the teams reduced to three skaters aside and both sides had multiple chances to win in in the extra session.

After a Beacons breakaway chance was stopped, Elmira College senior Emma Crocker beat a pinching UMass Boston player at the Eagles blue line and skated into the Beacons zone all alone. The 2019-20 First Team All-American made several moves before lifting a backhand over Kennedy 1:33 into the extra session.

Kennedy played her best game as a collegiate player in the contest. The sophomore netminder made a handful of stops on mini breakaways throughout the afternoon and stopped at least 13 shots in every period. She ended regulation with a career-high 41 saves and tacked on a key stop early in overtime.

Elmira freshman goalie Leonie-Louise Kuehberger moved to 5-0 after stopping a career-high 34 shots in the victory.

UMass Boston skated with the nationally-ranked visitors from the opening puck drop and created good chances in every period.

The Beacons top line of Ana Gustafson (Clarkston, Mich.), Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) and Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) looked threatening all afternoon and combined for 17 of UMass Boston's 34 shots.

UMass Boston had chances to win the contest late in regulation and overtime.

Freshman forward Allie Reifler (Binghamton, N.Y.) knocked down an attempted clearance in the third period and then rifled a high shot from the slot that Kuehberger was able to fight off with the glove.

After Kennedy made a save on Elmira's Morgan Mordini to begin overtime, sophomore defenseman Corin Trejchel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a golden chance to win it on the next rush. Liz Kramp (Farmington Hills, Mich.) found Trejchel with her back to the net, the freshmen turned and got off a pair of shots just outside the crease that were both chested down by the Elmira goalie.

Less than a minute later, Cailey Kozich (Wexford, Pa.) skated in one-on-one with the goalie but her shot went just wide of the far post.
