HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons played their most complete game of the season thus far but couldn't get over the hump in the non-conference battle with the undefeated Engineers.

Sophomore Jasharee Greene (Boston, Mass.) led all scorers with 20 points on 10-15 shooting. The reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week added eight rebounds and five assists.

Senior Meg Dixon (Hanover, Mass.) chipped in 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the loss. Sunny Green (Brewster, Mass.) registered eight points and Rayla Gonzalez (Boston, Mass.) tacked on seven points and four rebounds.

WPI senior Lisa Cristiano went off for career-high 18 points on 8-11 shooting off the bench. She also notched six rebounds and two assists. Presseau was the only other Engineer in double-figures, as she finished with 12 points and two assists. Alex Scariati just missed out on a double-double with nine points and eight assists.

After a flat first quarter in which they were outscored 20-12, UMass Boston came alive in the second stanza.

With the Beacons trailing 28-20 midway through the quarter, the Beacons went on an 11-1 run to take a 31-29 lead at the break. Greene started the flurry with a layup and Gonzalez tacked on a lay-in of her own to cut the deficit to five. Green made it a two-point game with a deep three and Greene tied the game with a steal and a lay-up in transition. Dixon put the Beacons ahead, as she drew a foul in the final 10 seconds and knocked down both free throws.

The Beacons stretched their advantage to as many as six early in the third quarter on a pair of Dixon 3-pointers.

WPI would turn it around late in the quarter and used a 9-2 run to take a 46-43 lead into the final quarter.

Trailing by six early in the fourth, UMass Boston used baskets from Keriann Farina (Arlington, Mass.), Gonzalez and Greene to tie the game one final time at 49-49.

WPI would score the next four points and led by at least two points until Gonzalez hit a free throw with 1:26 left in regulation to make it a 55-54 game.

On the next possession, Dixon blocked Cristiano but the ball went out of bounds and back to the visitors. After a timeout, Presseau drained a corner 3-pointer to give WPI a 58-54 lead with 54 seconds left.

The two teams would trade free throws on their next two possessions to seal the WPI victory.
