BRISTOL, R.I.—Host Roger Williams jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles en-route to a 9-0 win over UMass Boston women's tennis on Thursday night at the RWU Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing their second match in as many days, UMass Boston women's tennis struggled to keep up with a strong Hawks side.
In doubles action, junior
Lia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomore
Elena Albano (Haverhill, Mass.) put up a big fight at second doubles, before falling 8-5.
The Beacons top pair of
Lydia Chan (Quincy, Mass.) and
Meagan Carney (Arlington, Mass.) suffered their first doubles defeat with an 8-3 setback.
At third doubles,
Tanya Kibiy (Rockville, Md.) and
Skylar Robles (Spokane, Wash.) fell 8-2.
The hosts would carry their momentum over to singles play and pick up big wins at third, fifth and sixth singles.
After dropping the first set 6-0 at third singles, Vassiliadis made it much tighter in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-4.
Carney went toe-to-toe with Emma Place at number one singles. Place eventually earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
In the closest match of the day, Chan and Alessia Cahoon went to three sets at second singles. After Cahoon won the first set 6-2, Chan answered back with a 6-3 second-set victory. In the third set tiebreaker, Cahoon held on for a 10-5 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The match was the first meeting between the two programs since 2003. Roger Williams leads the all-time series 8-2.
- Thursday's loss was the Beacons first 9-0 setback since April 7, 2019 when they fell 9-0 at Regis College (Mass.).
- Carney and Chan suffered their first collegiate doubles loss of their career. Carney also took her first singles loss of the season.
