Women's Tennis Sets Single-Season Wins Record In Rout Of Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt.—UMass Boston easily swept host Castleton University 9-0 Tuesday afternoon, to earn their single-season record 11th win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston dropped just four games in doubles play and kept the momentum going into singles, as they picked up their eighth-consecutive victory.

Five Beacons went 2-0 in the victory, led by senior captain Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.). Gauthier earned her 49th and 50th career victories, in her 100th and 101st collegiate matches.

The Beacons opened the match with Amy Drame (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Gauthier earning an 8-0 sweep at first doubles.

Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Shelby Parent (Cambridge, Minn.) made it 2-0 moments later, when the Beacons second doubles pair collected an 8-1 win.

At third doubles, Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) and Evangelia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.) delivered an 8-3 win.

Vassiliadis made it 4-0 to begin singles play, when she swept Megan Hunt 6-1, 6-1 at third singles.

Gauthier clinched the match win with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Emily Miller at second singles.

The Beacons extended their lead to 6-0 at sixth singles, when Parent dominated Alexis Curley 6-0, 6-0.

Drame was the next player to finish, as she notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles.

In the closest match of the day, Tueme defeated Grace Sharkey 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles.

Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) closed out the match with a  6-4, 6-0 win at fourth singles.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With the win, the Beacons broke a tie with the 2001 team for the most wins in a single-season. 
  • Gauthier is the fourth player in program history to win 50 or more matches and the sixth player to appear in 100 or more matches. 
  • Vassiliadis moved into second-place in program history for wins in a single-season (22) with her two victories. 
  • UMass Boston improve to 2-3 all-time against Castleton University with the win. The Beacons are 2-0 against the Spartans since Castleton joined the Little East Conference last fall. 

WHO'S NEXT 

UMass Boston will conclude their match against Western Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The Beacons, who lead 3-0 in the match, will host the Colonials indoors at the Weymouth Tennis Club.
