BOSTON, Mass. – In their final match of the 2014 fall season, women's tennis was handed a 7-2 loss by the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State University Friday afternoon at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts.
With Friday's loss the Beacons closed out their 2014 campaign with a 3-9 record overall, 1-7 in the Little East Conference. The Bears, who sit tied for second in the conference standings, improved to 7-2, 5-1 in the LEC.
Friday's match also marked the final match for the Beacons lone senior member in Stephanie McKenna (Amherst, N.H.). McKenna teamed-up with Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) at third doubles in her final fall match with UMass Boston.
Earning the first point of the day for the Beacons was Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) and Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.). The duo earned a hard fought 8-4 win over Melissa Flynn and Alisha Silva to get the day off to a good start for UMass.
The Bears would take second and third doubles by the finals of 8-1, 8-1. With Bridgewater leading 2-1 as the two team's moved into singles play, the Beacons knew they could make a push in hopes of earning a huge conference win for their senior teammate.
Garcia, continued her winning ways picking up a huge 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles. Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) played perhaps her best match of the season as she went back-and-forth with Bridgewater's Rachael Eramo. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Celebi fought back and won the second set 7-5. The two would go to a third set tie-breaker with Eramo taking the 10-5 victory at fifth singles.
Alison Vautrin earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles, while Silva walked away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at third singles. Bojana Roman and Flynn secured the victory for the Bears with 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2 wins respectively.
The Beacons will return to action in the spring when they travel down south for their annual spring break trip.
