MILTON, Mass. – In their final non-conference match of the fall season, women's tennis (3-8) made it count in a big way as they defeated Curry College (1-14) by the final of 8-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The Beacons wasted little time taking total control of the non-conference match as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The teams of Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) and Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) and Stephanie McKenna (Amherst, N.H.) and Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) powered past their Curry College opponents with 8-2 and 8-3 wins respectively.
In singles play, Garcia started the action off with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first flight. Hannah Erickson, would earn the lone point for Curry, but it was too little too late. Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 before Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) was able to walk away with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth flight.
The Colonels would forfeit the final two singles matches as well as the third doubles match to give the Beacons the one-sided win.
UMass will close out their fall season on Friday when they host Bridgewater State University at 3 p.m. at Boston College High School. The match is a make-up of Saturday's contest, which was rained out.
