BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—Reigning Little East Champion Bridgewater State University (8-0, 5-0 Little East) proved too much for UMass Boston women's tennis (3-8 0-5 Little East) Saturday afternoon, as the host Bears earned a 7-2 win at the Rosen Memorial Courts.
UMass Boston's second doubles pair of Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.) and Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) earned the Beacons only point in doubles, while senior co-captain Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) outlasted her opponent at number two singles to stay perfect in conference play. The senior improved to 5-0 at second singles in LEC play and handed Jackie McGuirk her first loss of the season (7-1).
The Bears opened the match with an 8-2 win at number three doubles, as Rachel Eramo and Riley Pacic downed the Beacons pair of Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.).
UMass Boston tied the match 1-1 when Muntasser and Castelli earned an 8-5 win over McGuirk and Melissa Flynn.
Bridgewater State University took the lead for good though at number one doubles, as Jenna Williamson and Lauren Hopp knocked off Kloczewiak and Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) 8-6. The Beacons co-captains had two break points at 6-6 but couldn't earn the break against the reigning Second Team All Conference doubles pair.
Hopp pushed the Bears advantage to 3-1 when she defeated Counts 6-2, 6-0 at number three singles.
Williamson put Bridgewater State on the verge of victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Muntasser at top-flight singles.
The Bears clinched the match at number five singles, as Flynn outlasted Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) 6-0, 6-2.
Haley Perron gave Bridgewater a 6-1 lead when she knocked off Shea 6-2, 6-2 at sixth-flight singles and Alison Vautrin earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Castelli at number four singles.
UMass Boston earned the final point, as Kloczewiak earned a dramatic 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win over McGuirk at second-flight singles. McGuirk entered the match as one of four players undefeated singles players left in the LEC, and the only other second singles player to come into the match without a loss.
The Beacons return to Little East play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to Salem State University in a must-win conference tilt.
