BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston men's tennis picked-up right where they left off last year as they cruised to a 9-0 win over non-conference opponent Colby-Sawyer College Sunday afternoon in the 2012-13 season opener for the Beacons at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts.

The Beacons made quick work of the Chargers to improve to 1-0 on the year, while Colby-Sawyer fell to 0-1.

In doubles play the team of Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) defeated their Colby-Sawyer opponents by the final of 8-0 to get the afternoon off to a great start for the Beacons.  After that the new duo of Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass.) and Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.) pulled out an 8-1 win over Clay Allen and Reeve Fidler at number two doubles. 

In the final doubles match, the all-conference duo of David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) continued their strong play from a year ago as they earned an 8-3 win at number one doubles.

Moving into singles play Cullen cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at the number one flight.  Lai was the next Beacon to earn the win with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the number three singles.  Earning the Beacons third singles victory was Loyer, a 6-2, 6-2 decision.  Bizhoti notched his first singles win with UMass Boston at the fifth flight over Paul Holland with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Hernandez, who was named Little East Conference Rookie of the Year last season, had perhaps the longest and toughest match of the day as he and Clay Allen went into a tie-breaker.  Allen took a 7-6 (7-4) decisions in the first set, but it was Hernandez who would have the final say as he took a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The final win for UMB came from Shavers at number six singles as the junior walked away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.  Men's Tennis will next compete at the ITA/New England Regional Championship tournament starting on Friday in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
