BOSTON, Mass. – After taking an early 2-1 lead in doubles play, the host Rams of Suffolk University (5-0) would tally four wins in singles play to edge men's tennis (4-2) by the final of 5-4 Thursday evening.
Getting the Beacons off to a great start in Thursday's non-conference match was the second doubles pair of Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.). The two Beacons handed their Suffolk opponents a 8-2 loss. The Rams then tied the match at 1-1 with their first win of the day at third doubles with an 8-2 final. David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) then gave UMass the lead back after earning a hard fought 8-6 win at first doubles.
Both teams would continue to battle back and forth in singles play. Suffolk would once again tie the score this time at 2-2 with a win at fourth flight. Hernandez answered right back with his second win of the day at 6-1, 6-3 final at first flight. Suffolk then earned back-to-back wins to take a 4-3 lead, before Lai was able to tie the match at 4-4.
Suffolk would pull out the final win of the evening at sixth flight to keep the Rams five-match win streak alive, while bringing the Beacons recent hot streak to an end.
Men's Tennis returns to action on Saturday when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 1 p.m. Little East Conference match.
