Women's Tennis wins Conference Opener over RIC

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston women's tennis team continued their winning ways as they defeated Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College (0-7, 0-1 LEC) by the final score of 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Boston College High School  Tennis Courts.

The Beacons saw strong performances throughout their conference opener.  In doubles play MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouth Port, MA) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) pulled out an 8-2 victory at first flight.  Right behind them was Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA) and Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA) who earned a hard fought 9-7 win.

UMass closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win from Taraneh Farhangmehr (Newton, MA) and Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA). 

In singles play Kloczewiak continued her dominating play at first flight with a 6-4, 6-0 win.  Rhode Island College would nab their only point at second singles with a 6-0, 6-0 decision.

Arrigo defeated Gianna Vallante, 6-3, 6-4 to make it 5-1 in favor of the Beacons.  Steinman and Nguyen both earned 6-1, 6-0 victories, and Farhangmehr closed out the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-4 decision.

Women's tennis will return to the courts on Tuesday when they host Southern Maine at 3 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
