Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging

The UMass Boston Athletics and Recreation believes in and is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging among its student-athletes, coaches, staff, and administrators. The Department Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee, known as the “D.E.I.Beacons,” has created the following guidelines to help ensure that all Beacons are able to develop and thrive in an inclusive environment that promotes personal growth, acceptance, and support without prejudice, discrimination, or judgment:

Motto:

“One Beacon, Many Lights”

Mission:

To champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the UMass Boston Athletics and Recreation Department through active and ongoing learning, self-awareness and growth, and continuously evaluating and improving accountability measures.

Vision:

To cultivate and sustain a safe and inclusive environment where all student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff are seen, valued, respected, supported, and championed.

Objectives:

  • Define diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and how each relates to the department.

  • Cultivate a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the department.

  • Identify, share, and facilitate opportunities for learning, reflection, development, and self-growth.

  • Create inclusive leaders who will serve as champions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at UMass Boston and beyond.

Any questions about the D.E.I.Beacons Committee and the Department’s DEIB work should be directed to the Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence.
