UMass Boston treats pregnancy (pregnancy, false pregnancy, pregnancy termination, pregnancy loss, and childbirth) in the same way as other temporary medical conditions in the athletics context. Student-athletes cannot be dropped or deterred on the basis of pregnancy. A pregnant student-athlete can both continue to participate in the athletics program as long as it is medically safe and return to the team once it is medically safe to do so, as determined by the student-athlete and their healthcare provider. Â
In addition, student-athletes experiencing pregnancy, or a pregnancy-related condition will be provided with medically necessary leave and be reinstated to the same status as they held when the leave began. Title IX also applies to non-birth parents as it prohibits adverse treatment based on actual or potential parental, family, or marital status. Â
Questions related to pregnancy and athletic participation can be directed to CivilRights.TitleIX@umb.edu. More about pregnancy and parenting rights as a student at UMass Boston can be found at Pregnancy and Parenting Rights.Â
