The Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Performance and Operations oversees the Sports Medicine program that offers UMB student-athletes comprehensive care encompassing prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation and management of athletic injuries. In addition, much time is dedicated to the education and counseling of student-athletes in issues related to health and wellness.Â

Game/Practice Schedules: Please inform the Athletic Training Room a minimum of 48 hours, if possible, prior of any schedule changes to ensure proper coverage.Â

Sports Medicine Practice PolicyÂ
Â
The practice policy objective is to provide necessary information given by the sports medicine department to ensure student athlete safety. The guidelines described below best fit current needs and available resources.Â
Â
SPORTS MEDICINE COVERAGEÂ
- An athletic trainer will be present for all practices held on campus, Mondays through SaturdaysÂ
- Practice coverage begins 1 hour prior to the start of practice and 30 minutes after the end of the scheduled practice timeÂ
- If any changes are needed to be made to the schedule regarding practice times, When possible, the sports medicine staff needs to be aware of change 48 hours before time of proposed date. If the notice is within 48 hours, there is no guarantee of athletic training coverage. Â
- All non-traditional practices are to be scheduled within the time frame 9-5 daily. If the time of practice must be outside of these hours, the coach must notify sports medicine staff and the sports medicine staff will work to find a per diem AT to cover that practice. Â
- The athletic training room will be available XXXXXX for non-traditional student athletes or by appointment only. Â
- An athletic trainer will be present at all HOME competitions and eventsÂ
- Competition coverage begins 2 hours prior to the start of the competition and 30 minutes after the competition ends.Â

- All men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse competitions Â

- All non-traditional practices that are within the normal day hours will be covered by an athletic trainer on site.Â
- The head coach of the home team is required to have a portable AED at all practices and home competitions not staffed by an athletic trainer.Â
In case of emergency outside of posted hours, go to the nearest Emergency Room or call 911. If    on campus contact UMB Public Safety Emergency number 617-287-7777. Notify the Athletic Trainer ASAP after the incident.Â

Key Points:Â
- All practices are to be logged into the ARMS system under calendar. Â
- During each season, traditional and non-traditional teams will be provided with a small medical kit that will be used for practices and away games only. This bag must be brought back to the Athletic Training Room at the end of the season and periodically to refill first aid contents. Â
Golf Cart Â
- The golf cart that resides by the softball field is used for sports medicine staff only. It is vital that the golf cart is readily available to ensure a quick commute to an emergency if the sports medicine staff is not on the field at the time of injury. Â
- The cart will also be used to transport the water coolers for the start of practice by the sports medicine staff. Â
Water Â
- Each team is responsible for filling up their own water coolers and bottles prior to the start of practice. Once filled in the AT room, the team is responsible for bringing the coolers to the golf cart and load them onto the cart to allow for adequate time management between the student-athletes and sports medicine staff. Â
- Along with the water coolers, and dependent on practice location. Outdoor facilities will be provided with a portable AED. Â
- At the end of each practice, each team will be responsible for bringing back the water coolers back into the AT room. Â
- Each student-athlete will be provided with their own 32 oz Powerade bottle based on the team’s preference. Â
Radios Â
- Athletic training staff and coaches will have a 2-way radio for every practice held on campus or BC High. Â
- In the event of an emergency the coach will radio the AT when needed and the AT covering the practice will arrive within 5 minutes of the radio call utilizing the golf cart. Â
- From the point of arrival, the AT will determine if athlete can either return to play, transport back to AT room for further evaluation or initiate emergency response if necessary. Â
Per diem coverage Â
- Per diem athletic training coverage will be utilized when the sports medicine staff is either unable to coverage the practice or game scheduled. The AT staff is responsible for securing per diem coverage. Â
- All non-traditional practice that are outside of the time frame of 9 am and 5 pm will require a per-diem athletic trainer.Â
