Sports WageringÂ
The NCAA opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering, which has the potential to undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the welfare of student-athletes and the intercollegiate athletics community (Bylaw 10.3).  Â
Per Bylaw 10.3, the following individuals shall not knowingly participate in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur, or professional athletics competition:Â Â Â
-
Nonathletic department staff members who have responsibilities within or over the athletics department (e.g., chancellor or president, faculty athletics representative, individual to whom athletics reports)Â Â
Per Bylaw 10.4, disciplinary actions will be taken for any prospective student-athlete, current student-athlete, or staff member found in violation of sports wagering rules. Bylaw 19.5.2 fully outlines the penalties, disciplinary measures and corrective actions that can take place for major violations.  Â
Fantasy leagues for money, March Madness brackets with entry fees, sports pools, online sports bets and sports parlay cards are all forms of sports wagering. The Compliance Office will send pertinent reminders regarding sports wagering throughout the year.  Â
If you risk something of value, such as an entry fee, for a chance to win a prize or monetary reward, you are in violation of the NCAA sports wagering bylaws. This applies regardless of the level of competition, as long as the sport is sponsored by the NCAA. In addition to NCAA rules, illegal gambling is prohibited by the UMass Boston Student Code of Conduct. All student-athletes, coaches, and staff are expected to familiarize themselves with federal and state laws concerning illegal gambling.
