UMass Boston

Operations Manual - Tryout Policy

Tryout Policy

All students eligible to compete under university, conference and NCAA rules will receive a fair opportunity to tryout and be selected for any UMass Boston intercollegiate athletic team. Criteria and expectations for team membership will be communicated with all prospective student-athletes transparently. Final selection decisions rest solely at the discretion of the head coach.

Process for Scheduling a Tryout:

  • The head coach must notify the compliance office and their respective athletic trainer via email two (2) weeks prior to the hopeful tryout date.

  • The head coach will need to complete a Change of Roster Form via ARMS and mark the student athlete as a tryout in the system. The tryout can take place during a nontraditional season or can be conducted over a 48-hour period of two (2) training sessions.

  • The student is responsible for completing the entire ARMs profile for clearance (medical and UMB compliance paperwork).

  • Once reviewed, the compliance office will send an email to the head coach confirming tryout clearance for the individual. The coach is then responsible for communicating the tryout information to the student.

Process for Making Cuts:

  • All cuts shall be made in-person. This process should not take place when the Counseling Center is unavailable (Friday night, Saturday, Sunday or on a holiday). Students who are cut will be notified by the head coach of the support systems that are available for them if they would like to utilize them.

  • An official Change of Roster Form will be assigned in ARMs for each individual tryout candidate who is cut from the team for the head coach to fill out, as well as to be approved by the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Development, who will then adjust the team’s ARMs roster accordingly.  Upon completion of the Change of Roster Form, the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Development will alert all relevant areas within the department, including equipment, academics, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and sports communications.

Please note, pertaining to bylaw 14.7.2.1.1, an individual who fails to make the team after a tryout is not considered a member of the team and will not be a part of the program for the remainder of the season.

If a student is selected for the official roster following a tryout, the head coach must notify the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance and Student-Athlete Development. The student will be added to the Affirmation of Eligibility Statement for the season, which is filed prior to the start of the season of competition and included in the official roster headcount. Additionally, their status in ARMs will be updated to reflect them as a member of the official roster.
