UMass Boston student-athletes are an integral part of the greater campus community and, therefore, responsible for their actions regarding drugs and alcohol as outlined in the University Policy on Alcohol and Other Drugs. Team members are governed by these rules and regulations both when on the UMass Boston campus and when involved in off-campus team functions. Â
Included within the standards of conduct are specific guidelines for the alcohol policy, which are as follows:Â
-
No person, group or organization may sell alcoholic beverages except pursuant to a license granted by the Commonwealth through the local licensing authority.Â
-
No person shall operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcoholic beverages.Â
-
No person who is intoxicated shall be served an alcoholic beverage.Â
-
No person or group shall purchase or otherwise procure alcoholic beverages for consumption by a person under 21 years of age unless the acquiring person is the spouse, parent or guardian of the minor.Â
-
No person under the age of 21 years shall transport, purchase, sell, possess, or receive alcoholic beverages (except such persons over 18 who may be lawfully employed in the alcoholic beverage industry,Â
-
No person under 21 years of age shall use the liquor identification card of another, or furnish false information in obtaining such a card, or alter or deface such a card. Violation of many of these provisions can subject the violator to criminal punishment of fines and imprisonment. In addition, persons who drive under the influence, or furnish alcohol to intoxicated persons or persons under 21, may be civilly liable to any persons who suffer personal injuries. The statutes and regulations are numerous and subject to change. The above generalizations should not be considered a complete and categorical statement of the present law. All members of the University community are expected to acquaint themselves with the laws and regulations relative to the possession, consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages.Â
In addition to this adherence to Federal, State, and local alcohol policies, the following policies pertaining to alcohol have been developed by the Department of Athletics and Recreation. An important purpose of the alcohol policy is to enhance athletic performance and to facilitate safe and enjoyable participation in team functions by all team members by eliminating the use of alcohol. Â
1. Team Functions - There will be no use of alcohol by any team member during any UMass Boston varsity intercollegiate team function. A team function includes, but is not limited to the following events:Â Â
-
Team banquets, parties on or off-campus, as well as parties to which all team members are invited, in or out of season. Â
2. Stricter Guidelines - A coach and team can set stricter guidelines, but it is the responsibility of the head and assistant coaches to enforce the alcohol policy. Â
3. Disciplinary Action - Disciplinary action is at the discretion of the head coach in consultation with the Athletic Director. The UMass Boston administration may also be involved in discussing appropriate disciplinary action, but team members are reminded that the possibility of further University sanctions exists if a student is also in violation of the University Code of Non-Academic Conduct.Â
