PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 5, 2026) — The UMass Boston field hockey program fell 8-0 at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI on Saturday. Despite the box score, graduate goalkeeper Elizabeth Crowley (Medfield, Mass.) set a new program high for saves in a game with an impressive 30 stops against 51 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
JWU wasted little time establishing control, with Anjail Sooknanan opening the scoring at 4:31 of the first period off an assist from Susannah Brown. Ava Pontes followed just 84 seconds later to put the Wildcats up 2-0 before the game was five minutes old.
UMass Boston found its most competitive stretch in the third period. Alexis Hudson [Lancaster, NY] made a crucial defensive save at 39:19, stopping a shot from Pontes on the goal line to keep JWU off the board for the quarter. The Beacons held the Wildcats scoreless through 15 minutes.
JWU closed the match with a four-goal burst in the final 11 minutes of the fourth period, to set the final at 8-0.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Graduate goalkeeper Bitsy Crowley [Medfield, MA] was the story of the afternoon for UMass Boston, turning in 30 saves on 57 shots faced across a full 60 minutes in goal. Her performance under relentless pressure — JWU generated 39 shots on goal and 17 penalty corners — was a standout individual effort for the first-year program. The Beacons combined for 31 saves on the day.
