BOSTON, Mass. (Sept. 4, 2026) — The UMass Boston Beacons (0-1-1) fell 3-0 to Emerson College on Thursday in a road contest that was kept scoreless at halftime by a standout goalkeeping performance before the hosts broke through with three second-half goals.
UMass Boston goalkeeper Janiya Morales Matier (North Easton, Mass.) kept the Beacons within reach through the first 45 minutes, making six saves on six shots on goal in the opening half alone.
Emerson converted three of seven shots on goal to pull away. All three goals came in the second half, with K. Laughrey, Z. Simmons and F. Mills each finding the net for the hosts.
Matier finished with 10 saves on 13 shots on goal across 90 minutes — a performance that reflected the Beacons' defensive resolve even as the final margin grew.
Offensively, UMass Boston managed four shots across the full 90 minutes. First-year forward Madi Pittman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Beacons with two shots, including one on goal, in 66 minutes of action. Senior midfielder Amanda Regan (Pepperell, Mass.) and sophomore defender Mia Carvalho (Ludlow, Mass.) each added a shot on goal, with Carvalho playing the full 90 minutes.
The Beacons opened the 2026 season with a 0-0 draw against Smith College on September 1 before Thursday's setback, and now stand at 0-1-1 on the year.
Matier's 10-save effort against a high-volume attack showed the kind of individual grit that can anchor a young group through a long season.
