Beacons Claim Five-Set Thriller Over Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 30, 2026) – UMass Boston rallied from a 1-2 set deficit to defeat Western New England in five sets from Springfield, MA, taking the final three sets — including a dominant 25-11 fourth frame and a tense 15-13 fifth — to improve to 8-7 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1 (26-24, WNE): Western New England edged the Beacons in a tight opening set, holding on through extra points to take a 1-0 match lead. 

  • Set 2 (25-20, UMB): UMass Boston responded with purpose, controlling the second set from wire to wire to level the match at one set apiece. 

  • Set 3 (26-24, WNE): The Golden Bears again pushed the Beacons to extra points and claimed the third set by the same 26-24 margin, putting UMass Boston on the brink at 1-2. 

  • Set 4 (25-11, UMB): The Beacons answered with their most dominant set of the night, outscoring Western New England 25-11 to force a decisive fifth frame. 

  • Set 5 (15-13, UMB): UMass Boston held its nerve in a tense deciding set on the road, closing out the match 15-13 to secure the five-set victory. 

BY THE BOX 

  • Addie Blomgren (Riverside, Ill.) tied for the match high with 18 points, posting 14 kills on just one error across 26 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. She also led the Beacons with four total blocks, including one solo and six assists. 

  • Mya Perron (Beverly, Mass.) paced UMass Boston with a match-high 15 kills, adding 11 digs and four block assists for 17 total points — a double-double performance that anchored the Beacons' attack all night. 

  • Audrey Cofield (Ypsilanti, Mich.) orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and delivered a dominant serving performance, recording seven of the team's nine service aces while adding eight digs. 

  • Kaitlyn Leberstien (Wilmington, Del.) came within a dig of a triple-double, finishing with 10 kills, 12 assists and nine digs while hitting an efficient .348 across 23 attacks. 

  • Josie Becker (Westchester, Ill.) hit .364 on 10 kills and two errors, adding three total blocks and 13 points as a consistent presence at both ends of the net. 

  • Ashlee Wudi (Brookfield, Ill.) anchored the UMass Boston defense with a match-high 25 digs, keeping rallies alive across all five sets. 

  • UMass Boston hit .250 as a team compared to Western New England's .074, out-killed the Golden Bears 59-43 and controlled the net with 11.0 total blocks to WNE's 7.0.
