Baseball Overcomes 8-Run Deficit for Dominant Win Over MIT at Monan Park

BOSTON, Mass. (March 9, 2026) – UMass Boston Baseball (2-2) delivered an explosive offensive display in a rescheduled non-conference matchup at Monan Park, roaring back from an early eight-run hole to defeat MIT 22-16. The Beacons posted a season-best 18 hits and 22 runs, highlighted by standout performances from Ben Sherry (Fall River, Mass.), Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.), and Breon Parker Jr. (Springfield, Mass.), celebrating their second consecutive victory.

How it Happened:

MIT jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead in the top of the first, capped by a two-run homer from J. Dwyer. The Beacons answered quickly in the bottom half as Farnacci blasted a solo home run to put UMass Boston on the board.

The turning point came in the second inning, when UMass Boston erupted for six runs. Sherry tied the game at 9-9 with a two-run single, and the Beacons never looked back.

UMass Boston seized control for good in the third, totaling six more runs, including an RBI double by Sherry and multiple walks that forced in runs, giving the Beacons a 15-9 advantage.

The offense kept rolling throughout the afternoon, with Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) launching a two-run homer in the fifth and Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.) adding a solo shot in the eighth. MIT rallied for five in the seventh, but UMass Boston's early lead and relentless baserunning—eight stolen bases on the day—proved decisive as UMass Boston rallied for the wild win.

By the Numbers:

Sherry finished a near-perfect 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
Parker Jr. crossed home a game-high four times, stole four bases, and reached safely in all five plate appearances.
Farnacci went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
Gaer and Slack each homered, with Gaer collecting two RBI.
• UMass Boston racked up 18 hits, 13 walks, eight stolen bases, and 20 RBI, while seven different players scored multiple runs.
