Weymouth, Mass. (March 10, 2026) -- The UMass Boston men's tennis team capitalized in their spring home opener, securing a 5-2 win over University of New England at the Weymouth Club. The Beacons delivered a balanced team performance, picking up key victories in both doubles and singles competition to improve to 2-0 this spring.
Doubles Recap
UMass Boston took control early in doubles, winning two out of three matchups to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, the freshman duo of Thomas Ameral (Ellington, Conn.) and William Kubinec (East Boston, Mass.) edged out Liam Miller and Franco Leehive 7-5. At third doubles, Mario Pangione (Carver, Mass.) and Joseph Malone (South Dennis, Mass.) clinched a 6-3 win over Andrew Young and Logan Flor, helping the Beacons to an early lead.Â
Singles Recap
Stepping into singles, the Beacons secured wins at four out of six spots to seal the team victory. William Kubinec battled to a thrilling 6-4, 6-7, 7-3 win at No. 2 singles over Liam Miller, providing a crucial momentum shift. First-year Shaoyuan Song (Zhengzhou City, Henan Province) delivered a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against Logan Flor. Joseph Malone came through at No. 5, winning a three-set battle 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 versus Finnegan Whelden. Mario Pangione also shined at No. 6, defeating Tyler Mason 6-4, 6-1.
Despite dropping matches at first and third singles—Dominik Dwyer falling 1-6, 3-6 to Drake Turcotte, and Thomas Ameral dropping a 4-6, 3-6 decision to Franco Leehive—the Beacons' depth proved decisive in clinching the team triumph.
