DANBURY, Conn. (Oct. 3, 2026) – Three first half goals proved costly as the UMass Boston Beacons men's soccer team (4-4-1, 1-1-1 LEC) fell to the WestConn Wolves (8-3-3, 4-0 LEC) by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night at the Westside Athletic Complex in Danbury.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Beacons tallied three shots in the first nine plus minutes of the game including two from first year
Gabriel Jordao (Bellingham, Mass.), but were unable to find the back of the net as things remained scoreless early. WestConn then got on the board in the 16
th minute with a penalty kick goal by Campbell Chance and survived a near equalizer from
Ryan Doherty (Donegal, Ireland) that rang off the crossbar in the 19
th minute. The Wolves later added goals in the 26
th and 42
nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
UMass Boston continued to search for a goal and
Jesus Guarcas' (Providence, R.I.) attempt was denied by WestConn goalie Aime Ruggles in the 58
th minute. In the late stages of the second half, the Wolves' Francesco Giglio scored in the 86
th minute and
Idman Hodzic (Bosnia & Herezgovina) notched his first career goal for the Beacons just over three minutes later after a feed from Jordao.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
The two sides finished even in shots with 10 apiece and the trio of Guarcas, Jordao and
John Arruda (Minas Gerais, Brazil) tallied two apiece for UMass Boston.
Making his first appearance of the season in net for the Beacons,
William Martinez (Lynn, Mass.) registered two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Physicality was a theme for much of the match with a combined seven yellow cards and 24 fouls.
