On the Mound:
Tristan Ciampa (Wilmington, Mass.) turned in a strong start, going 6.1 innings while striking out six and allowing three runs. Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) came on in relief and earned his fourth win of the year, limiting the Corsairs to one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Angelo Centrone (Bethel, Conn.) handled the ninth, recording one strikeout while allowing just one hit to close the door.
How It Happened:
-
Both teams were quiet early on, with the Beacons recording the game's first hit — a single by Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) — in the opening inning.
-
The breakthrough came in the top of the fifth when Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Texas) singled and later scored on an RBI single up the middle from Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) for the game's first run.
-
UMass Boston added two more in the sixth, as Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) drove in Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) with a single, and Gaer brought home Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to make it 3-0.
-
The Corsairs tied it up in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, including a two-out RBI triple and a score on a passed ball.
-
UMass Dartmouth briefly took a 4-3 lead in the seventh after a wild pitch allowed a runner to score following a stolen base and an error.
-
In the top of the eighth, Jimenez was hit by a pitch and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Burris followed with a single, and Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) delivered a two-RBI base hit to center, giving the Beacons a 5-4 lead.
-
The ninth inning was all UMass Boston: seven runs on three hits, including a two-RBI single from Farnacci, a sacrifice fly from Jimenez, a two-run double by Miles, and an RBI double from Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.) sealed the decisive victory.
By the Numbers:
-
Eight different Beacons combined for 11 hits. Miles led the way with a 3-for-6 performance, adding two RBIs, a double, and a run scored.
-
Meagher chipped in three RBIs on one hit and two walks, while Farnacci and Parker each drove in two.
-
The Beacons ran wild on the basepaths, tallying 10 stolen bases, with three apiece from Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jimenez.
What's Next:
UMass Boston will return to action Friday at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination game against the LEC No. 3 Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State. The winner will play again on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the loser between the LEC No.1 Keene State. and No. 5 Rhode Island College for a spot in Saturday's Championship games.
