NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA. (February 12, 2025) – The Beacons' men's basketball team (11-11, 6-8 Little East Conference) scored 76 points, led by
Emanuel Zayas (Hollywood, Fla.) with 19 points in the Beacons' road effort against the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (9-13, 6-7 LEC), as UMass Boston fell short away from home.
Ten total Beacons made their mark in the scoresheet, as it was a total team effort against the Corsairs on Wednesday evening.
How it Happened:
First Half:
- Graduate Mark Barrett (Brookline, Mass.) set the defensive intensity with a steal on the opening possession. The ensuing offensive possession was salvaged by an offensive rebound from junior Tyler Victor (Brockton, Mass.) that led to Zayas finding first-year Raphel Laurent (Peabody, Mass.) for the game's first bucket in the paint.
- Back-to-back triples from Zayas kept the Beacons ahead one point with the initial five minutes expired.
- Following an 18-18 stalemate, Barrett's creative behind-the-back pass found senior Anthony Gauthier on the cut (Jaffrey, N.H.) to initiate an eight-point unanswered run. Barrett turned up the heat on the following defensive play with a strip steal that led to an Xavier McKenzie (Lowell, Mass.) and one fastbreak finish.
- Barrett's fast-break layup capped the run to give the Beacons an eight-point advantage with just under eight minutes to go.
- The Corsairs answered with an 8-0 run of their own to retake the lead with under five minutes to go (29-30).
- Victor's free throw in the bonus gave the Beacons' 30 heading into the halftime break.
Second Half:
- Laurent opened the second half inside for the Beacs to bring the deficit to 10 points.
- UMass Dartmouth built an 11-4 run in the middle of the second half to push the needle to a 20-point lead.
- In the final five minutes, the Beacons made one last push, outscoring the Corsairs 14-7, finished by an Ish Fofana (Boston, Mass.) layup to close out the half to give the Beacons 76 to the Corsairs 89.
By the Box:
- Zayas (19 PTS) and McKenzie (14 PTS) led the way offensively for UMass Boston, with Zayas shooting an efficient 8-13 (61.5 FG%) including 3-6 from downtown. McKenzie provided a pair of triples and a triad of steals on the defensive end.
- Laurent was an efficient 4-7 (57.1 FG%) for eight total points.
- Gauthier and Fofana led the way for the bench unit, providing a combined 14 points (seven each) in 19 and nine minutes of action, respectively.
- Barrett was once again all over the stat sheet, leading the team on the glass with six rebounds, six points, two assists, two steals, and one block.
- The Beacs shot 43.5% (30-69) from the field as a unit, and scored 19 second chance points, 38 paint points, 12 off turnovers, 26 bench points, and six on the fastbreak.
