Boston, MA (Oct. 1, 2025) – The UMass Boston Beacons swept the New England College Pilgrims in dominant fashion Wednesday night in their final non-conference game before Little East Conference (LEC) play begins this weekend.
UMass Boston started strong, limiting New England College to just 7 points in the opening set. The second set was much tighter, extending into extra points before the Beacons edged out a 27-25 victory. Leading 23-20, the Beacons saw the Pilgrims rally with four consecutive points to take a one-point lead. With the match on the line, Mary Denny converted a key kill from Audrey Cofield to tie the score. After two errors tied the set at 25, Kesmyn Alves and Adele Accelus closed out the set for UMass Boston.
The third set featured back-and-forth action before UMass Boston took control with consecutive points from Lauren Westlund to take a 12-10 lead. The Beacons maintained their momentum to win the set 25-17, completing the 3-0 match sweep.
UMass Boston dominated the match, outscoring the Pilgrims 57-15 and holding them to just 8 kills compared to the Beacons' 44.
Ten different Beacons recorded kills, led by Lauren Westlund's team-high 9 kills. Eleven players contributed points, with Westlund leading again with 12, followed by Paige Coulson with 9.
Defensively, Coulson, Mary Denny, and Mary Matthews each recorded double-digit digs. At the service line, Coulson, Westlund, and Addie Blomgren each tallied three service aces.
Audrey Cofield led all players with 38 assists.
