BOSTON, MA (January 3, 2025) – The Beacons' men's basketball team will play host to the visiting Salem State Vikings on Saturday, January 4, at 12:00 p.m. noontime for a non-conference showdown from the Clark Gymnasium.
Previously:
- The Last meeting in Salem saw the Beacons come up short 77-85 against the Vikings. All time, UMass Boston is 9-20 against Salem State, with their most recent win coming in December of 2022, when the Beacons took care of business 87-78. The Beacons have won just three in their last 10 against the Salem State, and average 79 points per game.
This Season:
- UMass Boston (6-4, 2-1 Little East Conference) enters Saturday's contest with their most recent win against Penn College (99-77) on December 28th. First-year Cameron Perkins (Danbury, Mass.), Xavier Mckenzie (Lowell, Mass.) and captain Emanuel Zayas (Hollywood, Fla.) lead the team in scoring with 25.8, 16.0, and 14.6 points per game. Zayas, a four year Beacon, approaches his 1,000th career point, as he currently stands with 989 total career points with UMass Boston. Graduate Mark Barrett (Brookline, Mass.) is a defensive anchor for the Beacons with his physical presence on the glass, and quick hands in the post. Barrett has earned his money cleaning the glass, spacing the floor, and making the right pass to help UMass Boston to a 6-4 record in his first year with the Beacons. First-years Raphel Laurent (Peabody, Mass.) and Davon Sanders (Mansfield, Mass.) have continued to flourish when given the opportunity. Laurent has seen minutes in all 10 games, and averages 7.9 PPG and 4.2 rebounds per game.
- The Salem State Vikings (3-9) are coming off back-to-back losses against Endicott (87-80), and Bowdoin (82-62). The number one and two offensive options are Nicholas Martinez and Tyrese Rho, who average a combined 34.5 PPG. Graduate forward Liam Byrne leads the charge on the glass with 10.4 rebounds per game. Byrne is also a menacing paint presence who averages 2.5 blocks per game.
