BOSTON, MA (April 2, 2024) – The Beacons' baseball team kept the wheels of their season churning in high gear following a 13-1 blowout over the Eastern Nazarene Lions from Monan Park underneath the lights and rain on Tuesday evening to improve their current win streak to seven consecutive victories over opponents such as Castleton, Tufts, and Western Connecticut State.
A total of five Beacons' pitchers shared duties from the bump in the victory, with sophomore right-hander
Ethan Hunt starting on the mound. Hunt threw for five innings struck out five, walked three, and allowed only two hits against 20 batters faced. Senior left-hander
Thomas Kierce came in to relieve Hunt and threw for one inning, faced four batters, and struck out three while only allowing one hit. Similar story for the next Beacons' pitcher, senior right-hander
Logan Lawrence, who came in to pitch in the seventh inning, saw five batters, allowed one hit, and earned three strikeouts in his one-inning stint. The final two relievers for the Beacons were represented by senior right-hander
Jackson Snider, and finally, senior
Ethan Errera who helped put the Lions down from Monan Park.
The Beacs totaled nine hits led by two apiece from junior
Mariano Jimenez, sophomore
Breon Parker, and sophomore
Max Garner, as Parker batted in three RBIs and came around to score twice in the effort. Garner scored a team-high three runs, in a team-high four at-bats. The weather may have been cold and rainy however the Beacons' bats were smoking hot, as four different Beacs batted for extra bases. Parker recorded a double in the fourth inning, Jiminez and Garner each recorded triples, and senior
Aidan Blake recorded a three-run home run in the fifth inning to center field. Seven baserunners got greedy on the path as the Beacons swiped nine stolen bases.
The Beacons would come out to a slow start due to the wind and rain, as first-year
Brandon Gaer's sac-fly to center field was deep enough to bring home Burris unearned.
The first official rally for the Beacons came in the fourth inning where they provided five runs on just two hits, kickstarted by Parker's RBI double to bring home Garner, and Jimenez. Parker would come around to score on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0 in favor of UMass Boston. But the Beacs weren't done there, as the Lions' pitching was rattled from the cold, Gouveia would also come around to score on a wild pitch. The Beacs would take home plate for free again on a double steal with Gaer drawing the throw to second allowing Blake to advance in time on the throw. UMass would enter the top of the fifth up six runs to nothing.
Another chance at the plate saw the bats only get hotter for the Beacons, as the fifth inning saw UMass record five more runs on five additional hits. The first came from another double steal with runners on the corners that allowed Garner to steal second safely and Jiminez to take home plate on the throwback. A Parker drive to center field would be deep enough to score Garner from second. Parker and Gouveia were brought home off Blake's no-doubter to bring the tally to 11-0 and the final runs of the inning.
The final two UMass runs of the onslaught came in the bottom of the sixth, the first coming from senior
Luke Leavitt on a ground out to shortstop that brought home Garner from third. The 13
th and final run came off an HBP from senior
Mike Gorham, who took one for the team and brought home sophomore
Nick Farnacci for the lucky 13
th run of the game.
Hunt Improves to 4-0 this season with the win, as the Beacs improve to 12-7 on the year while building their current win streak to seven. Their next matchup is slated for Thursday, April 4
th from Monan Park against the Hawks of Roger Williams University. Live stats and video coverage can be found at
