BOSTON, MA (March 2, 2024) – The Beacons Senior right-handed pitcher
Dillon Ryan held the Endicott Gulls to just one hit through four innings before the Gulls' bats swelled with heat in the fifth to run away with the victory from Monan Park, as the Beacons fall 5-1 to the Gulls on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Mariano Jiminez led off the lineup for the Beacons to get the bats going in the bottom of the first, and ended the game with a team-high two hits, but it would be junior catcher
Mike Meagher sending in the sole Beacon run on the day as his single to right was enough to bring sophomore outfielder
Justin Gouveia back home to score. Meagher ends the weekend with five RBIs to open the season. Ryan started on the mound for the Beacons and through for four innings, only allowing one hit and two walks along with six strikeouts as he faced 15 batters on 79 pitches. Junior right handed pitcher
Ross Dexter came in to relieve Ryan, as he faced 18 batters in his three innings pitched, striking out four batters on 66 pitches. Graduate right hander
Tim Cianciolo came in following Dexter's third inning, and went one-two-three to retire the side with ease. Senior right handed pitcher Sam Grey finished off on the mound for the Beacs, as he retired the side in 25 pitches, after giving up the final Gull's RBI of the game.
The first pitch drew command from the mound, as Ryan took control of the side with ease to begin the game, retiring the side through four batters on flyouts, and strikeouts. The Gulls' pitcher Gottesman replied with the same intensity on the mound, as the Beacons could only manage one hit to start the game off, as they left one runner on heading into the top of the second.
The next three innings were a dual of the starting pitchers. There were a total of three hits through the first four innings, two by UMass Boston, and one from Endicott, with both teams failing to gain any traction through the opposing defenses. The fifth inning saw the Gulls catch their drift, as they swung for three hits to drive in four runs in a swell of offense that would ultimately be enough to the Beacons down for the count.
The Beacons would find some consolation in the sixth inning following Meagher's RBI to send Gouveia home. The game would end following Gouveia's lineout to left field with two on as the Gulls fly over the Beacons to hand UMass Boston their first loss this season.
The Beacons fall to 1-1 this year, as the Gulls gain their first victory from Boston. Up next for the Beacs will be the Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from their home ballpark at Monan Park at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, March 5
