Men’s Hockey Battles To The End Against The Nation’s Best The Hobart Statesmen

BOSTON, MA (February 3, 2024) – First-year forward Jakob Teply was the lone Beacon to tally on the score sheet on Saturday evening from the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink against the top squad in NCAA Division III hockey, the Statesmen of Hobart College. It was a valiant effort, but in the end, the Beacons were overshadowed in a 6-1 New England Hockey Conference loss.

The Beacons tallied 26 total shots in the effort led by graduate forward Conor Foley. The faceoff leader tonight was first-year Jack Mortson, as he won possession of 12 different puck drops, a team-high for the Beacons. First-year forward Jacob Kaminski led the team in blocked shots, putting his body on the line on five different Statesmen's shots. Goalie duties were shared between first-years Antonio Tarantino, and Sal Carabelli, with Tarantino locking it down for the first and second periods, and Carabelli finishing things off in the third.

UMass Boston got off to a formidable start, as Tarantino and the Beacons' defense held the Statesmen to just one goal in the first period. Hobart struck within eight minutes of play in the first period. The Beacons remained heavy on the gas pedal throughout the first, with shots coming scarcely, yet each of their nine shots in the first period forced all nine of their shots on net.  Sophomore forward Jude Kurtas and senior forward Jacob Banks each contributed two shots in the period amidst a flurry of unfulfilling opportunities.

Mortson opened the second period of play with a faceoff win from the circle to gift the Beacons the opening possession. Hobart struck once again early in the embers of the second period, just under three minutes. The Beacons responded with some tests for the Statesmen goalie Damon Beaver, however, Beaver passed with flying colors. The Beacons were able to shave off the bigger chunk of the second period only scaving off the one goal. With just under five minutes remaining, the Statesmen struck once again to stretch their lead to three going into the final period of play.

Hobart sunk the knife two goals deeper within the first two minutes in the third period. Carabelli stepped in following the Statemen's fifth on the night. Teply was able to score a consolation goal minuscule moments afterward, as his goal was served on a silver platter by Ryan Leonard, as he split two Hobart defenders to find Teply alone on the glove side post.

The Beacons shake this week off and enter the final week of the regular NEHC season, as they prepare for Johnson and Wales, from Providence R.I at 7:00pm on Friday, followed by the Beacons senior day on Saturday, February 10 from the Edward T. Barry. Live stats and video coverage can be found at UMass Boston - Official Athletics Website (beaconsathletics.com).
