MILTON, MA (November 25, 2024) – The UMass Boston men's basketball team adds another win to their consecutive win column following a 101-72 routing of the Curry College Colonels to make it three straight victories for the Beacons.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 101 – 72 Curry College
UMass Boston (3-1)
Curry College (1-5)
How it Happened:
- Following his absence against Fitchburg State last Tuesday on November 19, first-year forward Cameron Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) made his return and didn't waste a moment picking up where he left off, scoring the game's first bucket from beyond the arc. Perkins kicked the following possession out to junior sharpshooter Hector Perez (Easton, Mass.) for a three-pointer to jump out to a quick 6-0 start. The Beacons continued to press the pedal to the medal on offense, running it up to 32-13 with time halfway expired in the first half. The Beacons were dominant on the defensive end and backboards in the early goings, allowing them to run away early on. To close out the half, graduate guard Bobby Joy (Harwich, Mass.) secured a steal and score, knocking down the transition three for the final bucket of an impressive first half showing. The Beacons were 16-36 from the field, 8-18 from beyond the arc, scored 15 points off 10 Curry turnovers, scored 10 in transition, and scored 14 points in the paint through the first half.
- Perkins opened the gates for the Beacons in the second half once again, this time with a paint jumper to increase the gap to 15. Another Perez three-pointer would see the Beacons up by the largest margin yet at 21 points. The Beacons continued to light up the field from downtown; by the final moments, Perkins stepped into back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to 29, as the Colonels seemed to lose their light. Back-to-back three-pointers from Perez would be the icing on the cake as UMass Boston completes an offensive outing against the Colonels on Monday evening.
By the Numbers:
- After hitting eight threes in the first half, the Beacons responded and hit 11 more in the second for 19-39 shooting (48%) from beyond the arc and 37-76 (48.7%) from the field. The largest lead was 33 at the 2:28 minute mark in the second half. Perkins had the green light and ran the field, scoring a career-high 26 points (11-19 FG, 4-6 3PT) with eight rebounds and three steals. Captain Emanuel Zayas (Hollywood, Fla.) and Perez each added 15. Zayas shot 4-8 (50%) from the field and hit 3-5 (60%) from beyond the arc to go with three steals. Perez only shot from downtown, hitting 5-8 threes with four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Xavier McKenzie (Lowell, Mass.) and Joy each added double digits offensively, with Joy adding 13 on 5-8 FG and 3-4 3PT to go with five assists and McKenzie adding 12, including three from downtown. Graduate Mark Barrett (Brookline, Mass.) once again led the effort on the glass with a team-high nine boards.
Who's Next:
- The Beacons will look to make it four in a row in the Little East Conference season opener against the Western Connecticut State Wolves on Sunday, December 1, at 3:00 p.m. from Danbury, Conn.
