Seniors Catch Fire on Senior Day in 4-0 Victory

BOSTON, MA (October 29, 2024)—The Beacons' men's soccer team celebrated their 13th consecutive undefeated game in a non-conference matchup against the Fitchburg State Falcons with a 4-0 victory from Boston, Massachusetts on the Beacons' Senior Day. Seniors Logan Erickson Potter (Swansea, Mass.), Joshua DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.), and Diego Gisholt (Tijuana, Mex.) each contributed to the score sheet in the win.
The Basics
UMass Boston 4 – 0 Fitchburg State University
UMass Boston 9-1-5 (5-0-2) Little East Conference)
Fitchburg State University 8-7-2 (3-2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • Erickson Potter was in on goal but was tripped up by Ajani Guzman to draw the penalty. Junior midfielder Elijah Elliot (Trinidad and Tobago) was called to action, and stepped up miraculously to put it top shelf in the left corner for the first half's only score. The Beacons outshot the Falcons eight-zero through the first 45 minutes of play.
  • The Beacons added eight shots in the second half (three on target) before breaking down the Falcons' defense again by adding three unanswered goals in the span of 11 minutes. First-year midfielder Pedro De Amorrortu (Buenos Aires, Arg.) would set up the first from a corner off a rifle of a shot that forced Malcolm Edwards to force a diving save, deflecting the shot out of bounds. Without Edwards heroics, Amorrortu would've placed it in the top corner. Gisholt took the resulting corner kick. It was placed on a dime for Erickson Potter to put his head to it, driving it past Edwards for the second tally of the game as the Beacons' faithful erupted into a frenzy for the senior on a momentous afternoon.
  • Just over two minutes later, a familiar situation set up a corner kick for the Beacons, following a laser-beam drive that forced Edwards to make another impressive save. This time, sophomore Jair Whyte (St. Johns, Antigua and Barbuda) placed it on a pinpoint for DeAlmeida to put his head to it, driving it into the near post and in for the Beacons' third unanswered goal.
  • First-year midfielder Amir Lahkiky (Melrose, Mass.) subbed into the game in the 70'th minute, just before the Beacons' second tally. With under five minutes remaining, DeAlmeida set up Lahkiky from the left wing off a quick one-two pass for the first-year to catch possession just outside the 18-yard box. He cut inside and booted a shocker that powered through Edwards from inside the 18-yard box, for the grand finale to a 90-minute thriller from Boston, Massachusetts.
By The Numbers:
  • Graduate goalkeeper Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) played just under 82 minutes, and junior Victor Reyes (La Union, El Salvador.) closed out the final eight to combine for UMass Boston's sixth consecutive shutout. It is a testament to the Beacons' stonewall defense during this run.
  • As a unit, the Beacs outshot the Falcons 22-8 (12-2 one target). The defense kept Ramirez calm and relaxed, as he only needed to add two saves in the clean sheet.
  • A chippy match, the Beacons added nine fouls compared to the Falcons' eight, however no cautions or ejections were issued.
  • On Senior Day, three seniors contributed to the win. Erickson Potter added his fifth goal of the season, from Gisholt's seventh assist.  DeAlmeida added his fourth goal of the season, and 20th of his tenure with UMass Boston, while also adding his first assist of the year. DeAlmeida led the way offensively with four shots (two on target).
Coach's Corner:
Head Coach Jake Beverlin added in his reaction to the big win.

"I'm happy for the boys. The seniors have been performing great, and they continued to show that today. It was nice to get every available player in. You can tell we are set up for success for many years to come with our young players."

Who's Next:
  • The Beacons will head to Willimantic, Connecticut on Saturday, November 2, for the LEC season finale, against the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors.
  • With a win on Saturday and draws from Western Connecticut State University and Rhode Island College, the Beacons will be crowned back-to-back LEC Regular Season Champions, through 20 points to RIC and WestConn's 19 points on the conference table.
