Women’s Soccer to Battle Spartans on the Road

BOSTON. MA (October 25, 2024)—The Beacons' women's soccer team will head north on Saturday, October 26, at 12:00 p.m. noontime for a conference battle against the Spartans of Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton.

  • The Beacons are 7-1 all-time against the Spartans, with the most recent meeting last season on October 20, resulting in a tight 1-2 loss for UMass Boston. Before this, the Beacons won seven straight against the Spartans, with the most significant victories coming in 2019 (3-0), and in 2018 in a 1-0 OT thriller. The Beacs average 1.88 goals per game and are undefeated on the road against Castleton.
This Season
  • This Season, the Beacons are 9-3-4 (4-1-1 LEC), and are 5-3-2 on the road. Their last result was a 3-3 dogfight against the Western Connecticut State University Wolves from James Cotter Field last Saturday, October 19. Primary goalkeeping option Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) is 7-1-2 this season in 12 games started. Against 124 shots, Cote has registered 51 saves (.761 save percentage) and has allowed 16 goals (1.58 goals against average) with one shutout this season against UMass Dartmouth on October 2. The Beacons' offensive has been blistering hot, with standout first-year forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) leading the offensive charge for UMass Boston with a LEC-high 16 goals (four game-winners) and season points with 38. Her most recent performance against WestConn saw the striker's second career hat-trick, her first was against UMass Dartmouth on October 2. Schallmo has been a primary playmaking option with six assists, tied for third in the LEC. First-year Kathryn Brown (Somers, Conn.) and junior Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R.) have been dark horse goal scorers for the Beacons, each with five goals this season. Brown's most recent score came against Keene State on October 12, and Rivera's most recent came against Plymouth State, when the forward scored her first-career hat trick in an 8-3 offensive onslaught. The Beacs' first-year trio in the middle of Devan Booth (Manchester, N.H.), Lucinda Cotter (North Easton, Mass.), and Daniella Celotto (Prospect, Conn.) have been active in midfield, equally producing three assists each for nine cumulatively of the team's 22 recorded assists this season. Graduate defender Caileigh Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) has been the anchor for the Beacons' defense.
  • Castleton this season is fourth in the LEC Table with a 7-8-1 (3-3 LEC) record. The Spartans average 1.44 goals per game and are 4-3-1 at home. Their most recent matchup saw Williams College String 10 goals in a shutout loss for the Spartans, and their last victory came against Plymouth State (1-0) on October 12. Junior goalkeeper Emma Ezzo (West Haven, Vt.) started in 16 games and is 7-8-1. She has faced 203 shots and registered 121 saves (.796 SV%), which is good for an LEC High in the recorded saves. She has allowed 31 goals for a 2.00 goals-against average and has recorded four shutouts this season. The Spartans duo of junior forward Maggie McKearin (Proctor, Vt.) and senior forward Alexis Billings (Carver, Mass.) lead the charge offensively for the Spartans with 17 goals between the two out of the 23 cumulatively scored by the Spartans this season. Billings has eight goals to go with five assists for 21 season points, and McKearin has nine goals and three assists to accumulate 21 season points.
