Men’s Soccer to Protect Home Turf in Conference Clash Battle vs Spartans

BOSTON, MA (October 25, 2024) – The Beacons' men's soccer team seeks to protect its home turf and the top seed in the Little East Conference against the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans at noon this Saturday, October 26.

Previously
  • The Beacons are 5-1 against the Spartans all time. Since 2018, the Beacons have been 4-1, with the last meeting seeing the most significant result of 6-0. UMass Boston averages 3.67 goals per game against the Spartans. This meeting will mark only the third meeting between the two in Boston.
This Season:
  • The Beacons are 8-1-4 (5-0-1 LEC) and currently roll into the weekend on a six-game consecutive win streak. Five of the previous six were conference wins, with the most significant for the Beacons coming over Keene State (5-0), the University of Southern Maine (5-0), and Western Connecticut State University (3-0). Graduate goalkeeper Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) currently leads the LEC in goals-allowed (six) and save percentage (.857). His last two performances were shutouts against WestConn and Worcester State, his first and second of the season in back-to-back performances. Ramirez is still undefeated between the pipes this season with a 7-0-2 record. The Beacons' first-year standout, Eduardo Chirico (Uberaba, Bra.), currently leads all Beacons with five goals scored to couple with three assists for 13 season points. Senior Logan Erickson Potter (Swansea, Mass.) stands level with Chirico at 13 season points through four goals and five assists. Senior back Deigo Gisholt (Tijuana, Mex.) has been the architect behind the win-streak, leading the team in assists with six on the season to go along with one goal. Sophomores Rafael Gross (Minas Gerias, Bra.) and Patrick Garcia (Brookline, Mass.) have recently burst into form. Garcia tallied a goal per game for three games before entering Wednesday's matchup against the Lancers, and is now at four goals tallied this season. Gross tallied one goal against Rhode Island College and Keene State, before adding a brace (two goals) against USM.
  • The Spartans stand sixth in the LEC table with a 5-6-4 (2-4 LEC) record.  Their most recent result was a 1-1 draw against Westfield State. The Spartans average 1.50 goals per game and are 2-4-3 on the road this season. Their primary goalkeeping option is First-year Xander Berthiaume (Colchester, Vt.), with a 4-4-4 record in 12 games started. Berthiaume faced 108 shots, allowed 14 goals (1.21 GAA), and registered 56 saves (.800 SV%) in over 1,000 minutes. Goal scoring has varied for the Spartans, with over 10 goal scorers this season. First-year Jacques Alfani (Burlington, Vt.) leads the offensive charge with four goals this season, his most recent against Paul Smith's College on October 13. Junior midfielder Matt Spiller (Fairfax, Vt.) leads the team in season points with three goals and four assists for 10 points. His most recent tally came in a 3-0 win over UMass Dartmouth.
