Sullivan's Penalty Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-1 Draw

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - After falling behind early in the second half, UMass Boston Women's Soccer was able to battle back, drawing 1-1 with Smith College in their season opener at Smith Stadium in Northampton, Mass.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Smith College 1

UMass Boston (0-0-1)
Smith College (0-0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half of Friday's game saw the soccer ball set up shop in the middle of the field. Outside of one save apiece in the first 15 minutes, neither goalie faced a shot on goal in the first 45.

The second half of action was quite a different story out of the gate. After less than two minutes of action, Smith's Karenna Kung took a pass from Kyla Warner and found the back of the net to open the scoring.

After 15 more minutes of defensive struggle, the Beacons earned a penalty kick in front of the Pioneers' net. Senior back Caileigh Sullivan took the opportunity and capitalized, scoring her first career goal to knot the game at one all.

Both defensive units continued to make life difficult for the opposing offense. The only shot on goal following the pair of scores was snuffed out by Julia Cote, who finished the day with a pair of saves on three shots faced.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The two teams combined for just 11 total shots with each team scoring once on three shots on goal
  • Sullivan's goal came on her first career penalty kick
  • Smith held a slight advantage in corner kick opportunities, 6-3
  • The two teams finished in a 1-1 draw for the second time in two seasons, pushing the Beacons' record in the all-time series to 0-1-2

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will return to James Cotter Field for the first time since 2021 to host the United States Coast Guard Academy at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 5. They will look to improve on their 2-1 record in the all-time series.
