BRISTOL, R.I. – UMass Boston Baseball overcame a pair of deficits through the first six innings against Roger Williams University, using a five-run seventh inning to complete their road comeback victory against the Hawks on Wednesday afternoon, 10-6, after freshman outfielder
Breon Parker's one-out triple helped give the Beacons the lead back in the rally inning.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 10, Roger Williams University 6
UMass Boston (14-6)
Roger Williams University (6-13)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior catcher
Craig Corliss gave UMass Boston the lead right off the bat, 1-0, in the first inning as his RBI groundout plated Parker, who led off the game with a single. But that lead would quickly disappear as sophomore infielder Owen Hibbard's one-out double and an RBI triple from senior infielder Matt Massaro tied the game back up at one. The Hawks would jump in front on the very next at-bat when junior Jack Morin reached on an error by senior infielder
Gianni Zarrilli Jr. and lead 2-1 after one frame.
Making his second start in the Beacon lineup, junior first baseman
Mike Gorham recorded his first RBI with UMass Boston as his bases loaded sacrifice fly in the second inning would tie the game up at two before Roger Williams escaped trouble with a double play ball off the bat of freshman outfielder
Justin Gouveia. Two more runs would come across the plate for the Hawks in the bottom half of the second on an RBI double by senior outfielder Christopher Flynn and RBI groundout from Massaro to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
Once again threatening with the bases loaded and nobody out, UMass Boston would only get one run across, this time on a sacrifice fly by Corliss to make it 4-3, before senior infielder
Aidan Blake was caught stealing and Zarrilli Jr. grounded out to end the top of the third inning.
With the Beacons electing to go to the bullpen after two innings, freshman pitcher
Justin DeFalco would go toe-to-toe with sophomore pitcher Lucas Lariviere over the next few innings with neither side allowing a run until the sixth inning. That would be when Roger Williams extended their lead back to two runs on an RBI single by junior infielder Nick Sheehan before DeFalco finished off the frame.
The next inning would be when UMass Boston finally broke through Lariviere as sophomore outfielder
Mariano Jimenez led off the inning with a walk and then freshman outfielder
Justin Gouveia singled with one out. That would send Parker to the dish whose two-run triple shifted momentum back in the Beacons' favor and forced Roger Williams to go to their bullpen with the game tied up at five.
Facing sophomore relief pitcher Nick Gleason,
Aidan Blake would give UMass Boston their first lead since the first inning with an RBI single to left, 6-5, with still only one out in the seventh. A Corliss fielder's choice coupled with Zarrilli Jr. striking out but reaching first on an errant throw allowed two more runs to come in for the Beacons who used a five-run seventh inning to take an 8-5 advantage.
Junior pitcher
Jackson Snider pitched a scoreless seventh inning while senior pitcher
Ethan Errera held the Hawks in check, allowing a single run in the eighth on an RBI single from sophomore infielder Mike Bogosian, while UMass Boston maintained an 8-6 lead. With his second home run in as many days, Zarrilli Jr.'s two-run home run in the ninth gave the Beacons an extra cushion for freshman pitcher
Josh Garner who shut down the Hawks in the 10-6 win.
