Baseball Falls to Babson College at Monan Park on Wednesday Afternoon

BOSTON, Mass. – In their penultimate nonconference game of the season, the UMass Boston Baseball bats were silenced by Babson College and freshman pitcher Jared Clark at Monan Park as the Beacons fell to the Beavers, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 0, Babson College 6

UMass Boston (19-13)
Babson College (22-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman pitcher Ethan Hunt would get the start for UMass Boston and have a rocky first inning before settling down for the remainder of his start. Hunt would allow the first three runners to reach via a hit batter, single and walk before getting senior catcher Michael O'Brien to strike out. However, Babson would cash in on the bases loaded opportunity as a walk to junior catcher Ike Kiely and fielder's choice from freshman outfielder Ryan Hvozdovic gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

Clark worked efficiently against the Beacon lineup but not without running into some trouble in each of the first five innings as UMass Boston would get runners in scoring position in those frames. After senior catcher Craig Corliss got to third with one out in the second, Clark would retire the next two batters to escape trouble. The same would be true in the third as junior outfielder Luke Leavitt reached second with nobody out before Clark again got out of the jam.

The fourth and fifth innings would yield the best opportunities as the Beacons put two on with nobody out in the fourth before Clark forced Corliss to ground into a double play and get senior infielder Gianni Zarrilli Jr. to fly out. In the fifth, UMass Boston put runners on second and third with two outs and Clark got senior infielder Drew Metzdorf to ground out to end the inning.

Babson College would tack on another run in the seventh inning after an overturned call on Zarrilli Jr's throw to first base led to the second out of the frame with the Beavers having a runner on third still. The next batter in Hvozdovic would reach first safely after a high throw from Zarrilli Jr., extending the Babson lead to three runs, 3-0.

Two more runs would come across the plate in the eighth inning for the Beavers on back-to-back RBI singles from freshman infielder Chris Basile and junior infielder Brant Savage, making it a 5-0 ballgame. After Clark allowed freshman outfielder Breon Parker to reach via hit by pitch, sophomore pitcher Luke McClintock would come in to finish the eighth and close out the ninth as well while the Beavers added another run on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitting Justin Guest en route to their 6-0 win over the Beacons.

BY THE NUMBERS
